Season 2: The Trial Against Steffen Baldwin
Overview
With the inaugural season of the “I Am Human. This Is My Dog.” podcast officially complete, we begin production of the highly anticipated season two - The Trial Against Steffen Baldwin.
In this upcoming season, we examine the rise and incredible fall of Steffen Baldwin - a former Ohio humane agent, shelter director, and popular pit bull advocate, who is currently serving 15.5 years after being found guilty in January 2025 of 32 felony counts, with charges ranging from bribery, telecommunications fraud, and multiple allegations of cruelty to a companion animal in the State of Ohio v. Steffen Evan Baldwin court case.
The rise
Originally from California, Baldwin moved to Ohio with his wife and son sometime in 2008, where he eventually accepted the role of director for the Union County Humane Society, where he simultaneously performed the duties of humane agent.
By the end of 2013, Steffen Baldwin created the non-profit organization - Animal Cruelty Task Force of Ohio, otherwise known as ACT Ohio, with the intention of providing a humane agent presence in rural counties of Ohio, to ensure those who commit acts of cruelty towards animals are held responsible.
By now, Baldwin was a rising star in animal welfare, becoming well known as a dog trainer, guest blogger, and pit bull dog advocate, which made him high in-demand and increased engagement on his social media platforms.
But, in early 2017, that all started crashing down.
The fall
In the spring of 2017, news began circulating across social media about a dog named Remi, who was put to sleep by Baldwin after an incident on his property.
Remi was declared a dangerous dog by the State of Ohio after he had two bite incidences while at the Trumbull County Dog Shelter. Despite that designation, he was saved by a northeast Ohio couple - Litsa and Angelo Kargakos, in May of 2016.
Several more similar allegations of dogs being euthanized surfaced, and an investigation into his conduct proceeded when the Kargakos approached Campbell police detective, Jim Conroy, with their case.
After several years, Baldwin, who moved in 2018 from central Ohio to Los Angeles County (CA), was arrested in August 2020 and brought back to Ohio to face dozens of charges. In March 2025, Baldwin was sentenced to 15.5 years in prison.
